For his two plates for this distinguished series Mucha chooses to depict heroines of antiquity. The image of Salomé is a sensuous, full frontal image in which the dancer is shown wearing ornate jewelry and a surprisingly complex, even abstract, veil. Unlike many depictions of her, she is not depicted carrying the head of John the Baptist, but rather in the throes of her dance which caused Herod such great pleasure.
